St. Virgil of Salzburg
St. Virgil of Salzburg was an Irish monk and missionary who played a significant role in the Christianization of Austria during the 8th century. He is best known for his work in establishing the Benedictine monastery in Salzburg, where he served as the bishop. His efforts contributed to the spread of Christianity in the region.
Virgil is also recognized for his scholarly contributions, particularly in the fields of astronomy and geography. He is credited with introducing the concept of the Earth’s spherical shape to the local populace. St. Virgil was canonized, and his feast day is celebrated on November 27.
