Spermatocyte
A spermatocyte is a type of cell involved in the process of sperm production, known as spermatogenesis. It is formed from a spermatogonium, which undergoes mitosis to produce primary spermatocytes. These primary spermatocytes then undergo meiosis, a special type of cell division that reduces the chromosome number by half, resulting in secondary spermatocytes.
Secondary spermatocytes further divide to produce spermatids, which eventually mature into sperm cells. This process occurs in the male reproductive system, specifically within the testes, and is crucial for sexual reproduction in many organisms, including humans.
