Spanish Habsburgs
The Spanish Habsburgs were a royal family that ruled Spain and its vast empire from the late 15th century until the early 18th century. They were part of the larger Habsburg dynasty, which originated in Switzerland and became one of the most powerful families in Europe. Key figures included Charles I of Spain, who was also Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and Philip II, known for his role in the Spanish Armada.
The Habsburgs expanded Spain's territories, including parts of Italy, the Netherlands, and the Americas. Their reign was marked by significant cultural achievements, including the Spanish Golden Age, but also by challenges such as economic difficulties and military conflicts. The dynasty ended in 1700 with the death of Charles II, leading to the War of the Spanish Succession.
