South American tapir
The South American tapir is a large, herbivorous mammal found in the forests and grasslands of South America. It has a distinctive body shape, with a stout body, short legs, and a long, flexible snout that resembles a trunk. Tapirs are typically brown or gray and can weigh between 400 to 900 pounds. They are excellent swimmers and often seek refuge in water to escape predators.
These animals are primarily nocturnal and feed on leaves, fruits, and aquatic plants. The South American tapir plays a crucial role in its ecosystem by helping to disperse seeds through its droppings. Unfortunately, it faces threats from habitat loss and hunting, leading to a decline in its population.
