Soto school of Zen
The Soto school of Zen is one of the major schools of Zen Buddhism that originated in Japan. Founded by Dogen Zenji in the 13th century, it emphasizes the practice of zazen, or seated meditation, as a means to attain enlightenment. Soto Zen teaches that enlightenment is not a distant goal but can be realized in everyday life through mindful practice.
Soto Zen is characterized by its focus on the simplicity of practice and the importance of being present in the moment. Unlike some other Zen schools, it does not emphasize koan study, instead encouraging practitioners to engage in meditation and mindful awareness in their daily activities.
