Somali National Movement
The Somali National Movement (SNM) is a political and military organization founded in the early 1980s. It emerged in response to the oppressive regime of Siad Barre in Somalia. The SNM aimed to promote the rights and interests of the Somali people, particularly in the northern regions of the country, and sought to establish an independent state.
The movement played a significant role in the Somali Civil War, particularly during the late 1980s and early 1990s. After the fall of Barre's government in 1991, the SNM declared the independence of Somaliland, a self-declared republic that remains unrecognized by the international community. The SNM continues to influence politics in the region today.
