Slovak National Movement
The Slovak National Movement refers to a series of efforts aimed at promoting Slovak identity, culture, and political rights, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It emerged as a response to the dominance of the Hungarian language and culture in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Key figures, such as Ľudovít Štúr, played a significant role in advocating for the Slovak language and national consciousness.
The movement sought to unify Slovaks and establish a distinct national identity. It laid the groundwork for later political developments, including the formation of Czechoslovakia in 1918, where Slovaks gained greater autonomy. The movement's legacy continues to influence Slovak nationalism and cultural pride today.
