Sixty-Seventh Amendment
The Sixty-Seventh Amendment to the Constitution of India was enacted in 1990. It primarily aimed to enhance the representation of women in local governance by reserving a certain percentage of seats for them in Panchayati Raj institutions. This amendment was a significant step towards promoting gender equality in political participation at the grassroots level.
The amendment mandates that at least one-third of the total number of seats in Panchayati Raj bodies be reserved for women. This includes both elected seats and those reserved for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, ensuring that women have a more substantial role in decision-making processes within their communities.
