Sixtus V Obelisk
The Sixtus V Obelisk is an ancient Egyptian obelisk located in Piazza del Popolo, Rome. Originally erected in Heliopolis, it was brought to Rome by Pope Sixtus V in 1586 and stands at about 25.5 meters tall, making it one of the tallest obelisks in the city.
The obelisk is made of red granite and is adorned with hieroglyphs that honor the Egyptian sun god, Ra. It was placed on a pedestal designed by the architect Domenico Fontana, symbolizing the power of the papacy and the connection between ancient Egypt and the Christian faith.
