Sirisena's Presidency
Maithripala Sirisena served as the President of Sri Lanka from January 2015 to November 2019. He came to power after defeating the incumbent president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, promising to promote good governance and combat corruption. His administration focused on reconciliation following the civil war and aimed to strengthen democratic institutions.
During his presidency, Sirisena faced challenges, including economic issues and political instability. His government struggled with internal conflicts and criticism over its handling of national security, particularly after the 2019 Easter bombings. Sirisena's term ended when he decided not to seek re-election, paving the way for Gotabaya Rajapaksa to assume the presidency.
