Siege of Chattanooga
The Siege of Chattanooga was a significant military engagement during the American Civil War, occurring from June to September 1863. The city of Chattanooga, Tennessee was a strategic transportation hub, making it vital for both the Union and Confederate forces. The siege began when Confederate General Braxton Bragg surrounded the city, cutting off supplies to the Union troops led by General William Rosecrans.
In late September, the situation changed when Union reinforcements arrived, including troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. The siege ended with the Union forces breaking through the Confederate lines at the Battle of Chickamauga, leading to a decisive Union victory. This victory helped secure Chattanooga as a key base for further operations in the South.
