Sian Ka'an
Sian Ka'an is a protected biosphere reserve located on the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. Established in 1986, it covers over 1.3 million acres and is home to diverse ecosystems, including tropical forests, wetlands, and coral reefs. The reserve is recognized for its rich biodiversity, housing numerous species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered.
The name "Sian Ka'an" translates to "Origin of the Sky" in the Mayan language. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not only important for conservation but also for the cultural heritage of the Mayan people, who have lived in the region for centuries. Visitors can explore its natural beauty through eco-tourism activities like birdwatching, kayaking, and guided tours.
