Shunga Empire
The Shunga Empire was an ancient Indian dynasty that ruled from approximately 185 BCE to 73 BCE. It emerged after the decline of the Maurya Empire and is known for its significant contributions to art, culture, and religion, particularly the promotion of Buddhism. The Shungas were instrumental in the spread of Buddhist teachings and the construction of stupas and monasteries.
The empire was founded by Pushyamitra Shunga, a former military general of the Mauryan dynasty. The Shunga rulers were known for their patronage of the arts, leading to the development of distinctive sculptures and architecture. The empire eventually declined due to internal strife and external invasions, paving the way for the rise of the Kanva dynasty.
