Short Bowel Syndrome
Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) is a medical condition that occurs when a significant portion of the small intestine is missing or has been removed. This can happen due to surgical procedures, congenital defects, or diseases that damage the intestine. The small intestine is crucial for absorbing nutrients and fluids from food, so a reduced length can lead to malnutrition and dehydration.
People with SBS may experience symptoms like diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue. Treatment often involves dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and sometimes medications to help manage symptoms and improve nutrient absorption. In severe cases, patients may require parenteral nutrition, which delivers nutrients directly into the bloodstream.
