Ileostomy
An ileostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the abdomen to allow waste to exit the body. This is done when the small intestine needs to bypass the large intestine due to conditions like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or cancer. The waste is collected in a pouch attached to the skin.
After an ileostomy, patients may need to adjust to a new way of managing their waste. The pouch must be emptied regularly, and proper care is essential to prevent skin irritation. Many people can lead normal lives after the procedure with the right support and education.
