Shogunate Leaders
Shogunate leaders were military rulers in Japan known as shoguns. They held significant power, often more than the emperor, especially during the Edo period (1603-1868). The shogunate system established a feudal structure where local lords, or daimyōs, governed their territories under the shogun's authority.
The first shogunate was the Kamakura shogunate, founded in 1192 by Minamoto no Yoritomo. Over time, various shogunates emerged, including the Ashikaga and the Tokugawa. These leaders played crucial roles in shaping Japan's political landscape, culture, and society until the restoration of imperial rule in the late 19th century.
