The Shikoku Pilgrimage is a famous pilgrimage route in Japan that consists of 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kōbō Daishi, also known as Kūkai. This journey spans approximately 1,200 kilometers (about 750 miles) around the island of Shikoku and is traditionally completed on foot, although some travelers use bicycles or vehicles.
Pilgrims, known as henro, often wear white clothing and carry a staff and a small bag. The pilgrimage is not only a spiritual journey but also a way to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Shikoku. Many pilgrims seek personal reflection, healing, or a deeper connection to their faith during this journey.
