Shelterwood Cutting
Shelterwood cutting is a forestry management technique used to promote the growth of new trees while maintaining a protective canopy. In this method, mature trees are selectively removed in phases, allowing younger trees to receive sunlight and nutrients. This gradual process helps create a healthy forest ecosystem.
The technique typically involves three stages: preparation, establishment, and removal. During the preparation stage, some trees are left standing to provide shelter for seedlings. In the establishment phase, new trees grow under the canopy, and finally, in the removal stage, the remaining mature trees are cut down, allowing full sunlight to reach the new growth.
