Shah Deniz Gas Field
The Shah Deniz Gas Field is a significant natural gas field located in the Caspian Sea, off the coast of Azerbaijan. Discovered in 1999, it is one of the largest gas fields in the world, with estimated reserves of around 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas. The field is operated by a consortium led by BP and includes several other international companies.
Production from the Shah Deniz field began in 2006, and it has since expanded through various phases. The gas extracted is primarily exported to Europe and Turkey, contributing to energy security in the region and diversifying supply routes away from traditional sources.
