Semigallians
The Semigallians were a Baltic tribe that inhabited the region of present-day Latvia during the Middle Ages. They were part of the larger group of Livonian tribes and were known for their agricultural practices, trade, and warrior culture. The Semigallians often engaged in conflicts with neighboring tribes and foreign powers, including the Teutonic Knights.
In the 13th century, the Semigallians faced significant challenges due to the expansion of Christianity and the military campaigns of the Teutonic Knights. Despite their resistance, the tribe gradually lost its independence and was integrated into the Duchy of Courland and later the Russian Empire. Their legacy remains an important part of the cultural history of Latvia.
