Seanad Éireann is the upper house of the Oireachtas, which is the legislature of Ireland. It was established in 1922 and plays a key role in reviewing legislation proposed by the lower house, Dáil Éireann. Members of the Seanad, known as Senators, are not directly elected by the public; instead, they are appointed through various methods, including by the Taoiseach and by university graduates.
The Seanad consists of 60 members, with 11 appointed by the Taoiseach, 6 elected by the National University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin, and 43 elected by local councils. While it can suggest amendments and delay legislation, it does not have the same power as the Dáil to initiate money bills.
