Sani Abacha
Sani Abacha was a Nigerian military officer who served as the Head of State from 1993 until his death in 1998. He came to power through a military coup and ruled with an authoritarian approach, suppressing political opposition and dissent. His regime was marked by human rights abuses and corruption, leading to widespread criticism both domestically and internationally.
Abacha's government was also known for its efforts to stabilize the Nigerian economy, although these efforts were often overshadowed by allegations of embezzlement and mismanagement. After his death, the Nigerian government began to investigate the vast wealth he had accumulated, which included billions of dollars stashed in foreign accounts.
