Sandinista
The term "Sandinista" refers to members of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), a political party in Nicaragua. The FSLN emerged in the 1960s and is named after Augusto César Sandino, a revolutionary leader who fought against U.S. intervention in Nicaragua in the 1920s and 1930s. The Sandinistas came to power in 1979 after overthrowing the Somoza dictatorship, promoting social reforms and anti-imperialist policies.
During their time in power, the Sandinistas faced opposition from the Contras, a rebel group funded by the United States. The conflict led to a civil war in the 1980s, which drew international attention. The Sandinista party remains influential in Nicaraguan politics today, advocating for social justice and economic reforms.
