Salazar's Regime
Salazar's Regime refers to the authoritarian government led by António de Oliveira Salazar in Portugal from 1932 to 1968. Salazar, a conservative and nationalist, established a corporatist state that emphasized economic stability and social order. His regime suppressed political dissent, controlled the media, and maintained a secret police force to enforce loyalty.
Under Salazar, Portugal remained neutral during World War II and focused on maintaining its colonial empire. The regime promoted traditional values and limited civil liberties, leading to widespread repression. Salazar's rule ended with his health decline, paving the way for the eventual Carnation Revolution in 1974, which restored democracy.
