Salazar's Estado Novo
Salazar's Estado Novo was an authoritarian regime in Portugal that lasted from 1933 to 1974. Founded by António de Oliveira Salazar, the government emphasized nationalism, conservatism, and a strong central authority. It aimed to maintain social order and economic stability, often suppressing political dissent and limiting civil liberties.
The Estado Novo promoted traditional values and sought to modernize the economy through state intervention. It maintained a corporatist structure, where various sectors of society were organized into groups that worked with the government. This regime ultimately ended with the Carnation Revolution in 1974, which restored democracy in Portugal.
