Saint Damien of Molokai
Saint Damien of Molokai was a Belgian priest born on January 3, 1840, known for his missionary work in Hawaii. He dedicated his life to caring for individuals affected by leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, on the isolated island of Molokai. His compassion and commitment to the leprosy patients earned him the title of "Apostle of the Lepers."
In 1889, Saint Damien himself contracted leprosy but continued to serve the community until his death on April 15, 1889. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, and his feast day is celebrated on May 10. His legacy highlights the importance of compassion and service to marginalized communities.
