Sago Mine
The Sago Mine is a coal mine located in Upshur County, West Virginia, USA. It gained national attention due to a tragic accident that occurred on January 2, 2006, when an explosion trapped 13 miners underground. The mine was operated by the International Coal Group and was known for its challenging working conditions.
Rescue efforts were launched immediately, but only one miner, Randal McCloy, was found alive after 41 hours. The incident raised significant concerns about mine safety regulations and led to investigations by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to improve safety standards in the mining industry.
