Rwandan Legal System
The Rwandan legal system is based on a combination of statutory law, customary law, and international law. It operates under a civil law framework, influenced by the French legal system and Belgian colonial law. The judiciary is independent, with the Supreme Court at its apex, overseeing lower courts and ensuring the rule of law.
In addition to formal courts, Rwanda employs Gacaca courts for community-based justice, particularly for cases related to the 1994 genocide. These courts aim to promote reconciliation and accountability by involving local communities in the judicial process, reflecting Rwanda's commitment to restorative justice.
