Royal Ulster Constabulary
The Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) was the police force in Northern Ireland from 1922 until 2001. It was established to maintain law and order during a time of significant political and social unrest. The RUC faced numerous challenges, particularly during the period known as the Troubles, which involved violent conflict between different communities.
In 2001, the RUC was replaced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) as part of the reforms recommended by the Patten Report. This change aimed to create a more representative and community-focused police service, addressing issues of trust and legitimacy within the diverse population of Northern Ireland.
