Rosewood Massacre
The Rosewood Massacre was a violent racial incident that occurred in January 1923 in the predominantly African American community of Rosewood, Florida. Tensions escalated after a white woman claimed she was assaulted by a Black man, leading to a mob of white residents attacking the town. The violence resulted in the destruction of homes and the deaths of several Black residents.
In the aftermath, many survivors fled the area, and the community was effectively erased. The event remained largely unacknowledged for decades, but it has since been recognized as a significant example of racial violence in the United States, highlighting the systemic racism of the era.
