Tulsa Race Massacre
The Tulsa Race Massacre occurred from May 31 to June 1, 1921, in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This area was known as "Black Wall Street" due to its prosperous African American community. The violence began after a confrontation between a Black man, Dick Rowland, and a white woman, leading to false rumors and escalating tensions.
Over 1,000 homes and businesses were destroyed as a white mob attacked the community, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 100 to 300 Black residents. The massacre was largely ignored in historical accounts for decades, highlighting issues of racial violence and injustice in the United States.
