Robert Recorde
Robert Recorde was a Welsh mathematician and physician, born in 1510. He is best known for introducing the equals sign (=) in his book, *The Whetstone of Witte*, published in 1557. This symbol was created to represent equality in mathematical equations, making calculations clearer and more efficient.
In addition to his work on the equals sign, Recorde contributed to various fields, including algebra and astronomy. He also served as the royal physician to King Edward VI. Despite his significant contributions, Recorde faced financial difficulties later in life and died in 1558, leaving behind a legacy in mathematics and education.
