Rice Terraces of Banaue
The Rice Terraces of Banaue are a stunning series of rice paddies located in the mountainous region of Ifugao, in the northern part of the Philippines. These terraces were carved into the mountains over 2,000 years ago by the indigenous Ifugao people. They are often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" due to their impressive engineering and the way they blend with the natural landscape.
The terraces cover approximately 2,000 square kilometers and are still used today for rice cultivation. They showcase the traditional agricultural practices of the Ifugao, who utilize a sophisticated irrigation system that channels water from the surrounding mountains. The Rice Terraces are not only a vital food source but also a significant cultural heritage site, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
