Red-Figure Technique
The Red-Figure Technique is a pottery painting method that originated in ancient Greece around the late 6th century BCE. This technique involves painting the background of a pottery piece black while leaving the figures in the natural red color of the clay. This allows for greater detail and flexibility in depicting human figures and scenes.
Unlike the earlier Black-Figure Technique, where figures were painted in black, the Red-Figure Technique enabled artists to use fine brushwork for intricate designs. Notable artists, such as Euphronios and Exekias, utilized this method to create dynamic and expressive representations of mythology and daily life on pottery.
