Red River Resistance
The Red River Resistance was a conflict in 1869-1870 in what is now Manitoba, Canada. It arose when the Canadian government attempted to assert control over the land and rights of the Métis people, led by Louis Riel. The Métis sought to protect their culture, land, and rights during the transition from the Hudson's Bay Company to Canadian governance.
The resistance included the establishment of a Métis provisional government and the negotiation of the Manitoba Act, which created the province of Manitoba. This act aimed to address the concerns of the Métis and ensure their rights were recognized in the new political landscape.
