Rasta
Rasta, short for Rastafarianism, is a spiritual and cultural movement that originated in Jamaica during the 1930s. It emphasizes the worship of Haile Selassie, the former Emperor of Ethiopia, whom followers believe is a divine figure. Rasta promotes a way of life that includes a strong connection to African heritage, social justice, and the rejection of materialism.
Central to Rasta beliefs is the idea of Zion, representing a promised land for people of African descent, often associated with Ethiopia. Rastas often use ganja (marijuana) as a sacrament to enhance spiritual experiences and promote meditation. The movement also embraces a distinct style, including the wearing of dreadlocks and colorful clothing.
