Quetzals
Quetzals are vibrant, colorful birds found primarily in the tropical forests of Central America, particularly in countries like Guatemala and Costa Rica. They are known for their striking green and red plumage, with males having long tail feathers that can reach up to three feet in length. Quetzals are also the national bird of Guatemala and hold cultural significance in various indigenous traditions.
These birds primarily feed on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates, often foraging in the canopy of trees. Quetzals are known for their unique nesting habits, as they prefer to nest in tree cavities, which provides protection for their young. Their populations are threatened by habitat loss and deforestation.
