Queen Maria of Portugal
Queen Maria of Portugal, born on December 17, 1819, was the daughter of King John VI of Portugal and Queen Carlota Joaquina. She became queen consort when she married her cousin, King Ferdinand II of Portugal, in 1836. Maria played a significant role in the cultural and political life of Portugal during her reign.
As queen, Maria was known for her charitable work and support of the arts. She was instrumental in the establishment of several institutions, including the National Theatre of São Carlos. Maria's reign ended with her husband's death in 1885, after which she focused on her family and philanthropic efforts.
