Quebec sovereignty movement
The Quebec sovereignty movement is a political effort aimed at making the province of Quebec an independent nation, separate from Canada. This movement has its roots in the desire of many Quebecois to preserve their distinct culture, language, and identity, primarily centered around the French language.
The movement gained significant traction in the late 20th century, particularly with the formation of the Parti Québécois in 1968. This party advocates for Quebec's independence and has held referendums on the issue, notably in 1980 and 1995, both of which resulted in a majority voting against sovereignty.
