Pyroptosis
Pyroptosis is a form of programmed cell death that occurs in response to infection or cellular damage. It is characterized by the activation of inflammatory processes, leading to the swelling and bursting of the cell. This release of cellular contents triggers an immune response, helping to eliminate pathogens and alert neighboring cells.
Unlike other forms of cell death, such as apoptosis, which is generally non-inflammatory, pyroptosis promotes inflammation. It is primarily mediated by proteins called caspases, particularly caspase-1, which play a crucial role in recognizing danger signals and initiating the pyroptotic process.
