Pyramids of Meroë
The Pyramids of Meroë are an ancient group of pyramids located in Sudan, near the banks of the Nile River. They served as the royal cemetery for the Kingdom of Kush, which thrived from around 800 BCE to 350 CE. The site features over 200 pyramids, characterized by their steep angles and smaller size compared to the more famous Egyptian pyramids.
Constructed primarily from sandstone, the pyramids were built as tombs for the kings and queens of Kush. Many of them are adorned with intricate carvings and hieroglyphs, reflecting the rich culture and beliefs of the Kushite civilization. Today, the Pyramids of Meroë are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
