Purple Loosestrife
Purple Loosestrife is a perennial plant native to Europe and Asia, known for its striking purple flowers that bloom in mid to late summer. It typically grows in wetlands, along riverbanks, and in disturbed areas, reaching heights of up to 10 feet. The plant has a square stem and narrow leaves, making it easily identifiable.
Although beautiful, Purple Loosestrife is considered an invasive species in North America. It can outcompete native plants for resources, disrupting local ecosystems and reducing biodiversity. Efforts to control its spread include mechanical removal and the introduction of natural predators, such as certain beetles.
