The Ptolemaic Dynasty was a royal family that ruled Egypt from 305 BCE to 30 BCE. It was founded by Ptolemy I Soter, a general of Alexander the Great, after Alexander's empire fragmented. The dynasty is known for its blend of Greek and Egyptian cultures, as the Ptolemies adopted many local customs while promoting Hellenistic traditions.
The most famous member of the Ptolemaic Dynasty is Cleopatra VII, who became the last active ruler of ancient Egypt. The dynasty ended when Cleopatra and her ally, Mark Antony, were defeated by Octavian (later known as Augustus) in 31 BCE, leading to Egypt becoming a province of the Roman Empire.
