Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures
Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES) are episodes that resemble seizures but do not have a neurological origin. Instead, they are often linked to psychological factors, such as stress or trauma. Unlike epileptic seizures, which are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain, PNES occur due to emotional distress or mental health issues.
Diagnosis of PNES typically involves a thorough medical evaluation, including electroencephalogram (EEG) testing to differentiate them from true seizures. Treatment often focuses on addressing the underlying psychological issues through therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
