Protein Degradation
Protein degradation is the process by which proteins are broken down into smaller peptides or amino acids. This occurs in cells to remove damaged or unneeded proteins, maintaining cellular health and function. Enzymes called proteases play a key role in this process, cleaving proteins at specific sites.
The degradation of proteins is essential for various biological functions, including regulating cellular processes and recycling amino acids for new protein synthesis. Ubiquitin-proteasome system and lysosomal degradation are two major pathways that cells use to manage protein turnover and ensure proper cellular function.
