Pope Sergius III
Pope Sergius III served as the head of the Roman Catholic Church from 904 to 911. He is often remembered for his controversial papacy, which was marked by political intrigue and corruption. Sergius III was involved in the power struggles of the time, particularly with the influential Theophylact, a powerful noblewoman.
During his papacy, Sergius III is noted for excommunicating his predecessor, Pope Formosus, and for the subsequent trial of Formosus's corpse, known as the Cadaver Synod. This event highlighted the intense factionalism within the Church and the political machinations that characterized the era.
