Cadaver Synod
The Cadaver Synod was a bizarre event that took place in 897 AD, where the deceased Pope Formosus was put on trial. After his death, Pope Stephen VI ordered the exhumation of Formosus's body and had it dressed in papal robes. The corpse was propped up on a throne in a church, and a deacon was appointed to speak on its behalf during the trial.
The synod accused Formosus of various crimes, including violating church laws while he was alive. The trial ended with a guilty verdict, and the body was desecrated, leading to outrage and chaos in Rome. This strange episode highlighted the intense political struggles within the Catholic Church during that time.
