Pope Celestine V
Pope Celestine V was a pope who served for a brief period in 1294. Born as Pietro Angelerio, he was a hermit and a member of the Benedictine order before his election. His papacy lasted only five months, during which he struggled with the complexities of church politics and the demands of leadership.
In December 1294, Celestine V became the first pope to resign, citing his inability to manage the responsibilities of the papacy. After his resignation, he was imprisoned by his successor, Pope Boniface VIII, and died in 1296. His life and resignation raised questions about the nature of papal authority.
