Poljes
Poljes are large, flat-bottomed depressions found in karst landscapes, typically formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock. They are characterized by their fertile soil and are often surrounded by steep cliffs. These natural features can be several kilometers wide and are usually filled with water during the rainy season, creating unique ecosystems.
In addition to their ecological significance, poljes are important for agriculture. The rich soil supports various crops, making them valuable for local farming communities. Notable examples of poljes can be found in regions like Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, where they contribute to both biodiversity and agricultural productivity.
