Platelet Precursors
Platelet precursors, also known as megakaryocytes, are large cells found in the bone marrow. They play a crucial role in the production of platelets, which are essential for blood clotting. Megakaryocytes undergo a process called endomitosis, where they replicate their DNA without dividing, resulting in a larger cell that can produce thousands of platelets.
Once mature, megakaryocytes extend long projections called proplatelets into the bloodstream. These projections fragment into smaller pieces, releasing platelets into circulation. This process ensures that the body has a sufficient supply of platelets to prevent excessive bleeding and maintain overall health.
